I am an ecologist and creative nonfiction writer, now retired from a faculty position in the Department of Environmental Science and Ecology at the State University of New York - Brockport. I grew up in California, in what has become Silicone Valley, when there still were plum and apricot orchards and plenty of open space. I immersed myself in the natural world at an early age, and what started as a love affair with the Big Sur country and the High Sierra eventually led to a career in field biology and teaching. For me the outdoors remains a sanctuary and place of inspiration, a world that has nurtured my scientific research, creative writing, body, and spirit. I am grateful that over the years I have been fortunate to share this world with my students, my friends, and my family.
